Week #1: Computer Software Engineer

There's an app for that.

As a computer software engineer, your job could be to design iPhone apps or create the next Facebook.

Computer software engineers design, build, and maintain computer software systems. Software engineers analyze user needs and develop software solutions. They design software for client use with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency.

Like to work alone? Many software engineers serve as consultants and own their own businesses.

The average pay for a computer software engineer in Indiana is about $70,000. The government projects a 31 percent increase in the number of openings for computer software engineers over the next ten years. There will be 240 job openings per year in Indiana for computer software engineers.

How to Become a Computer Software Engineer:

Most computer software engineering jobs require at least a bachelors degree. You can start your education at Ivy Tech with an Associates of Science in Computer Information Systems.

With an Associates Degree in Computer Information Systems you can concentrate your studies in the areas of database management, programming/analyzing, web management, or you can self-direct your studies to the area that most interests you. You can also get a certificate in database management, java programming, visual programming, or web management.

An Associates of Science in Computer Information Systems from Ivy Tech would transfer to a variety of four year universities throughout Indiana. For example, the CIS degree will transfer to your first two years of a four year Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Technology at IUPUI.

You would most likely begin your career writing code, and then move up in the ranks to begin designing and engineering software.
